One Fewer Permit to Worry About If You're an International Student on Co-op

This is a small change, and it's worth saying plainly: it doesn't open a new door, it just removes an unnecessary one. Students doing a co-op placement or internship as part of their program used to need two things: a study permit, and a separate work permit specifically for the placement. As of April 1, 2026, that second permit is gone for eligible students. The employer just needs to be approved by the student's designated learning institution as part of the program.

What actually changed

• Eligible post-secondary international students no longer need a separate work permit for program-required co-op placements or internships.
• One study permit now covers the full program, including the work placement.
• This doesn't increase how many students are authorized to work, and it doesn't affect temporary resident volumes. It's a pure administrative simplification.
• If you had a co-op work permit application pending, you don't need to do anything. IRCC is withdrawing all eligible and active applications on its own.
• Full eligibility criteria are on IRCC's website; not every co-op or internship arrangement automatically qualifies, so it's worth confirming your specific program and employer meet the criteria.

Why this matters

Most immigration news is about something getting harder, more competitive, or more restricted. This one's the opposite: it's the system quietly admitting a step was redundant and cutting it. That doesn't happen often, so when it does, it's worth noticing.
